In Kenya, Margaret Wambugu explains how Kenya's small scale milk vendors have improved handling and hygiene of milk, raised their profit margins and increased milk supplies to consumers at home or in milk bars. This progress in the milk supply chain contributes US$33 million annually to the Kenyan economy. The Smallholder Dairy Project has been supported by the UK Department for International Development (DFID).
The Smallholder Dairy Project (1997-2005) was a collaborative effort of the Kenya Ministry of Livestock Development, the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). More information on the project, including project reports, policy briefs and extension materials, are available at the project website http://www.smallholderdairy.org
